The German flag carrier Lufthansa will launch flights to Macedonia next year. The airline will commence direct operations between Frankfurt and Skopje on April 23 for the first time and will operate a total of 10 weekly rotations on the route. The flights will be operated twice a day three times a week and once a day on the remaining four days of the week. Airbus A319 aircraft with capacity of 126 seats will mostly be deployed on the route.
"Lufthansa is offering Skopje for the first time from April 23 and will connect the capital of Northern Macedonia up to two twice a day. The flights with the numbers LH1540 and LH1542 are scheduled to be attractive for both business travelers and tourists. Lufthansa is strengthening its position in Eastern Europe by adding Skopje" - Lufthansa said.
Lufthansa will face no direct competition on this route, as it will be the only carrier to finally connect Skopje with the main airport of Frankfurt, despite Wizz Air which is going to operate three weekly flights to Hahn, a city near Frankfurt next season with the 230 seat Airbus A321 aircraft.
Lufthansa will become the newest transfer carrier for Skopje, along with the main one - Turkish Airlines and Austrian Airlines which are operating up to 14 times a week to the airport. Austrian Airlines saw its best and busiest summer at Skopje this year, with the airline deploying its Airbus A321 aircraft ( the biggest narrow-body jet of their fleet ) to Skopje a few times per week. Lufthansa will offer great connections from Skopje via their hub in Frankfurt to destinations in North and South America, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Miami, Montreal, Atlanta, Sao Paolo, Rio De Janeiro; destinations in Africa, Middle East, as well as Asia, such as Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, Bangkok, Delhi, Mumbai and many more. Lufthansa will also offer connections to many European destinations, such as Amsterdam, London Heathrow, Dublin, Manchester, Stockholm Arlanda, Helsinki, Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona and many others.
Eurowings had previously plans to launch flights from Munich to Skopje, but decided not to go for the service just a few weeks after the tickets were put on sale. Skopje was directly connected in the past by two Macedonian carriers - Avioimpex and Palair Macedonian which operated daily flights on the route. Wizz Air is currently the only carrier to operate flights from Skopje to 10 cities in Germany, including Memmingen, Friedrichshafen, Karlsruhe / Bade - Baden, Frankfurt Hahn, Nuremberg, Cologne, Dortmund, Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen. The airline also operated flights to Hannover but terminated the route last year.
