The Macedonian government has prepared and finalized the plan for financial support it will give to the airlines to launch new routes from 2023 till 2025, Ex-Yu Aviation says. In the coming period, the government will issue a public call for granting subsidies to airlines for the introduction of new routes. “Enabling travel to additional destinations in Europe and the world will also open opportunities for economic development, promotion of tourism and cooperation between citizens and the business sector from our country and from other countries”, the government said in a statement.
the Macedonian Minister for Transport and Communications, Blagoj Bočvarski said, “The new model will aim to include as many airlines as possible and not be tied to just one. We are also limiting the amount of subsidies as required and requested by the European Commission, all in order to enable as many destinations as possible for citizens and to develop air traffic”. He added, “Airlines that operate with larger aircraft, to main airports and offer more weekly flights will have an advantage. The contract will oblige airlines to continue to maintain flights on the route even after the subsidy contract ends”.
Wizz Air has won all tenders for subsidies from the Macedonian government until now, and it is planning to deploy its 6th jet in Skopje as of May 2023 which will enable the airline to increase the flights on 10 routes from the base as well as to open new routes. Flights to Slovenia and Prague are already considered as well as the return of Larnaca, Barcelona and Hannover.
