Sarajevo Airport plans runway extension!

According to the aviation portal "Bosnia And Herzegovina Aviation News", Sarajevo International Airport plans to extend its runway. Sarajevo Airport has recognized all the parcels that fall within the scope of the runway extension, and based on the contract with the Institute for Construction of the City of Sarajevo, an annex to the contract in question has been concluded with the aim of specifying cadastral parcels in relation to land parcels. On the basis of this annex, the owner was changed in the cadastral operation of the Municipality of Ilidža in favor of Sarajevo Airport, and the land and cadastral status was thereby harmonized.

This created the conditions for the start of the development of project documentation for the execution of works on the extension of the runway. The extension of the runway from the current 2,600 to 3,150 meters is planned. The actual length of the runway extension will be determined by an aeronautical study. As for the reconstruction of the existing PSS (runway), the project has been completed and the airport is currently in the phase of obtaining documentation in order to obtain a construction permit, which will be followed by the tendering process. According to current estimates, the start of the works could be realized in the third quarter of 2023 or the second quarter of 2024. After the completion of the runway extension works, it will be possible to land and take off most wide-body aircraft without weight restrictions.

Construction of taxiway D

In May of this year, Sarajevo Airport chose the IPSA Institute Sarajevo to prepare project documentation for the construction of high-speed taxiway D. In order to increase the capacity of take-off and landing operations, especially during peak hours, the Conceptual Project for the Expansion of the Maneuvering Areas of Sarajevo Airport and the Master Plan of Sarajevo Airport plan the construction of taxiways that will to ensure flexibility in performing operations, to ensure a quick departure of the aircraft from the runway, to shorten the period of occupancy of the platform, to ensure the use of taxiway "A" for the exit of the aircraft to the holding position simultaneously with landing, and passing in the zone between the fast exit taxiway and the end of runway 30, i.e. the connection runway "A" on the runway.

Extension of the terminal building

The extension of the terminal building is nearing completion, after which the phase of modernization of the old part of the terminal building begins. In this phase, the construction of corridors for boarding passengers and the construction of new cores for aircraft bridges are planned, as well as the procurement of new aircraft bridges, and the formation of new internal spatial capacities with the aim of adapting to the new organization of passenger flows after the spatial integration of the extended and old part of the terminal building. The contract for the purchase of three air bridges was signed in April this year with the German-Spanish company THYSSENKRUPP AIRPORT SYSTEMS S.A. in the value of 3.9 million marks. The new aerobridges are scheduled to be installed during 2023/2024 and will feature the upgraded Visual Docking Guidance Systems (A-VDGS).

The expansion of the aircraft parking platform is also underway, which should be ready by the start of the summer flying season. Four new positions are being built for medium-sized Airbus 320 or Boeing 737 aircraft. Upon completion of the works, Sarajevo Airport will have 11 parking positions for Airbus 320/Boeing 737 aircraft. At the same time, work is also underway to reconstruct parking position number one, which is the only position remaining for renewal from the current seven positions.
