Skopje International Airport handled 123.358 passengers during the final month of 2021, representing a decrease by only 30% if compared to the same period in 2019 when the airport handled over 170.000 passengers.. The airport also saw an increase by 163,5% if compared to the same month in 2020 when 46.859 passengers were welcomed.
Skopje International Airport finish 2021 with a total of 1.266.230 passengers handled, down by 46,2% if compared to the pre-pandemic levels in 2019 when 2.353.327 passengers were handled. This also shows an increase by 78,6% if compared to the worst year for the aviation industry - 2020 when only 709.241 passengers were handled.
Wizz Air operated the most flights and handled most passengers for Skopje Airport during 2021. The airline connected the airport to over 25 destinations across Europe and restored the flights to nearly all routes except for Malta, Larnaca and Budapest. At the end of the year, the carrier also launched two new routes from Skopje to Billund and Bologna. They operated with a fleet of three, four and five aircrafts during the last year, and had deployed all of their types, such as Airbus A320, A321, A320neo and A321neo.
Austrian Airlines was the first carrier to return the flights between Vienna and Skopje to the pre-pandemic levels. The carrier even used Airbus A321 aircraft for this route during the busiest summer months. Pegasus Airlines also returned the flights from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen to Skopje on the pre-pandemic levels and even increased them. The carrier operated eight weekly service on this route during 2021.
Among these carriers, Turkish Airlines, Air Serbia, Croatia Airlines, Aegean Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Chair Airlines, Edelweiss Air, Nordwind Airlines, Sun Express, Anadolu Jet, Fly Egypt and Enter Air operated flights to and from Skopje during the year of 2021.
The busiest routes for the airport were Vienna, Zurich and Istanbul.
