Wizz Air the top one airline, London the busiest route for Sofia Airport in 2021!


The Hungarian low cost carrier Wizz Air is represented as top one carrier which operated flights to and from Sofia Airport in 2021 with 29,3% of the market share of passengers carried.


Opened on 21 April 2006, the base in Sofia was connected with 33 destinations operated by six aircrafts last year. The newest destinations from the base in Sofia of Wizz Air in 2021 were Corfu, Mykonos and Chania in Greece which are seasonal as well as Abu Dhabi, London Gatwick and Malaga. Two new routes will be launched this December, Stockholm Skavsta and Hamburg, increasing the number of routes from Sofia on 35. The carrier operates most flights from Sofia to London Luton & Gatwick, Dortmund, Milan Bergamo, Barcelona and Tel Aviv.


Behind Wizz Air, on the second place is another well known low cost carrier in Europe - Ryanair with 24,8% of the market share of carried passengers last year. The national airline of the country, Bulgaria Air is on the third place with 15,9% of the market share.


On the fourth place is Lufthansa with 8,6% of the market share, followed by Turkish Airlines with 3,9%, Austrian Airlines with 3,2%, Aegean Airlines and easyJet with 1,8%, LOT Polish Airlines with 1,4% and Flydubai with 1,3% of the market share of carrier passengers in 2021.

  1. London ( Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton & Stansted ) with 400 926 passengers

  2. Frankfurt with 194 502 passengers

  3. Munich with 177 308 passengers

  4. Varna with 175 192 passengers

  5. Vienna with 135 106 passengers

  6. Paris with 132 541 passengers

  7. Istanbul with 119 423 passengers

  8. Milan with 105 699 passengers

  9. Eindhoven with 95 668 passengers

  10. Madrid with 86 035 passengers


Sofia Airport welcomed a total of 3 364 151 passengers in 2021, down by more then 50% if compared to 2019 when the airport handled 7 107 096 travelers. The number of the aircraft movements in 2021 was 40 771, down by 20% if compared to 2019 when 61 371 aircraft operations were noted.
